Battery Maintenance: The Walk-Round That Keeps Banks Alive

It is a walk-round: a short, regular, written-down inspection that treats the battery room as a place where someone is expected. The rhythm: glance, sample, audit

For vented stationary batteries the trade has a formal rulebook — IEEE 450, the recommended practice for their maintenance, testing and replacement — and its skeleton is a rhythm of monthly, quarterly and yearly attention. Translated out of committee English: a monthly glance (the whole bank, eyes and a few overall readings), a quarterly sample (selected “pilot” cells measured properly, as a spot-check on the family), and a yearly audit (every cell measured, every connection checked, and — where the duty justifies it — the discharge test that our battery testing guide calls the only real proof of capacity). The exact schedule for your installation belongs to your specification and your maker’s manual, not to a blog post; what does not vary is the shape. What the eye catches

Most of a walk-round needs no instrument at all. Electrolyte lines: every cell between its marks, and any cell drinking faster than its neighbours noted by number — a thirsty cell is telling you something. Terminals and connectors: the first bloom of corrosion, any hint of heat discoloration. Jars and covers: cracks, bulges, electrolyte weeping at post seals. Vent plugs: seated, clean, unblocked. And everywhere: cleanliness. A film of dust and acid mist across cell tops is not a housekeeping offence but an electrical one — it grows tracking paths that leak current to earth and between cells. What the instruments catch

Four readings do most of the work. Overall float voltage and float current, read at the charger: a bank that has sat on float charge for years develops habits, and a drift in its float current is one of the earliest whispers of trouble — grid corrosion, a shorting cell, a thermostat lying about the room. Pilot-cell voltage: individual cells compared against their own history, not against a universal number. Every reading above is nearly worthless as a snapshot and nearly priceless as a trend. Cell seven at its usual gravity is Tuesday; cell seven three points below its own last quarter is a diagnosis beginning. This is why the log book — paper or spreadsheet, nobody cares — outranks any single instrument in the room: it is the only tool that can see time. It also changes conversations. A warranty discussion that opens with two years of dated readings is an engineering conversation; one that opens with “it just died” is an argument.
